Tucked away in Tokyo’s Suginami ward sits Renkō-ji, a temple with a story that spans continents and echoes with the whispers of history. Renkō-ji isn’t your typical grand Japanese temple. It’s small, unassuming, and yet, it holds a secret that binds India and Japan together. Renkō-ji is the resting place of the purported ashes of Subhas Chandra Bose, a prominent figure in India’s struggle for independence.

Renkō-ji was established in 1594, dedicated to the God of Wealth and Happiness. It embraces the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, a belief centered around the Lotus Sutra as the path to salvation. Centuries later, this tranquil temple would become a focal point in a historical controversy. Following Bose’s reported death in a plane crash in Taipei in 1945, his ashes were brought to Renkō-ji. The then Chief Monk, Reverend Mochizuki, agreed to safeguard the remains, conducting a funeral ceremony on September 18, 1945. A small, golden pagoda within Renkō-ji became the vessel for these ashes.

Every year on August 18th, Bose’s death anniversary is observed at Renkō-ji by his associates. Over the decades, numerous Indian dignitaries have made the pilgrimage to this quiet corner of Tokyo. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, President Rajendra Prasad, Indira Gandhi, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee all paid their respects to Bose at Renkō-ji. The temple became a symbol of shared history and respect between two nations.

However, the story of Bose’s ashes at Renkō-ji is not without its complexities. The Mukherjee Commission, established by the Indian government, concluded in 2005 that Bose did not die in the plane crash, thereby casting doubt on the authenticity of the ashes housed in Renkō-ji. This conclusion was rejected by the Indian government, adding another layer to the mystery surrounding Bose’s demise and the significance of Renkō-ji. The controversy even extended to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision not to visit the temple during his time in Japan. Renkō-ji, therefore, stands not only as a place of worship, but also a silent witness to a historical debate that continues to intrigue and resonate. It reminds us that history is not always clear-cut. It is woven with unanswered questions and interpretations that continue to evolve. As you stand before Renkō-ji today, consider the weight of history held within its walls. It’s a story of faith, international relations, and a historical enigma that remains unsolved.
