Within Tokyo’s bustling Ryogoku district, a beacon of tradition thrives. Isegahata-beya, a sumo stable, pulses with the heartbeats of aspiring wrestlers. Isegahata-beya isn’t just a building. It’s a crucible where young men forge their bodies and spirits in the ancient art of sumo. Originally known as Ajigawa stable, Isegahata-beya was established in 1979 by former sekiwake Mutsuarashi. He later passed the leadership to the legendary yokozuna Asahifuji in 1993. Asahifuji not only inherited the stable but also a vision. He renamed it Isegahama stable in 2007, adopting a prestigious elder name to elevate his ichimon’s standing within the sumo world. The stable’s current head coach is still the esteemed Asahifuji. Many wrestlers at Isegahata-beya adopt ring names ending in “fuji” to honor him. This tradition reflects the deep respect and camaraderie within the stable. Isegahata-beya’s roster boasts an impressive lineup, including Takarafuji, who has achieved the esteemed rank of sekiwake. The stable even housed two yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo: Harumafuji and Terunofuji. In a remarkable feat, Isegahata-beya achieved the distinction of having six sekitori wrestlers in the top makuuchi division simultaneously in November 2022. This accomplishment hadn’t been seen since 2004, highlighting the stable’s strength and dedication. Isegahata-beya remains a testament to sumo’s enduring legacy in the heart of Tokyo.
