Thirty-two tons an hour. That’s how much waste the Müllverbrennungsanlage Pfaffenau processes. Imagine that for a moment. Mountains of refuse transformed into energy.

This isn’t just any incinerator. The Müllverbrennungsanlage Pfaffenau is Vienna’s third and newest waste-to-energy plant. Opened in September 2008 it’s a vital part of Simmering’s environmental complex. It stands alongside Biogas Wien a facility we’ll explore later. Both share a striking orange exterior. A bold architectural choice reflecting the city’s waste collection vehicles. The result of a pan-European architectural competition.

The Pfaffenau plant isn’t simply burning trash. It’s a sophisticated system. A massive 18 000 cubic meter waste bunker feeds two cranes. These cranes deliver waste to the incinerators. The heat generated is used to produce steam. This steam powers a back-pressure turbine creating electricity. Enough to power around 25 000 Viennese homes.

The remaining steam is cooled down. The resulting heat goes into Vienna’s district heating network. Heating another 50 000 homes depending on the season. The heat fluctuates between 95 and 150 degrees Celsius. A clever dual-purpose system.

And the waste doesn’t disappear completely. The resulting slag contains a significant amount of metal. Around 800 kilograms of scrap iron per hour. This high metal content is thanks to the addition of bulky waste. The waste is shredded directly in the bunker. The metal is recovered and recycled in the iron industry. This innovative process minimizes waste while generating valuable resources.

Even the smoke isn’t wasted. A four-stage cleaning system ensures minimal emissions. It’s equipped with an electrostatic precipitator a two-stage wet scrubber an activated carbon filter and a denitrification plant. Emissions are far below legal limits. It’s a testament to Vienna’s commitment to sustainability.

The Müllverbrennungsanlage Pfaffenau isn’t just a place to dispose of waste. It’s a symbol of Vienna’s forward-thinking approach. It demonstrates a commitment to modern waste management and energy efficiency. It is a vibrant part of Vienna’s infrastructure. A testament to Viennese ingenuity. It uses technology and design to tackle a crucial challenge. A challenge that will only grow in the coming years.
