“No Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church around Dulles airport?” This question sparked the beginnings of Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church. Imagine six people meeting in a high school parking lot. It was September 4th 2005. They named their prayer group Tsion Mariam.
Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church’s story is one of faith, community, and perseverance. It began with a simple need. People living near Dulles Airport lacked a local Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church. They had to drive 30 to 40 miles to attend services.
The Tsion Mariam prayer group grew. They received blessings from Archbishop Abune Kewestos in September 2005. They continued their spiritual service until March 2010. Then, a new chapter began.
On March 7 2010, Archbishop Abune Abraham blessed the official establishment of Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church. A parish council of nine members was elected that very day. They were tasked with overseeing the church’s administration.
In September 2010, Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church started holding services at 655 Spring Street in Herndon VA. About 170 parishioners attended. The church quickly outgrew this location. After only two months, they needed more space.
Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church moved to a repurposed warehouse at 506 Shaw Road in Sterling VA. The congregation continued to grow. In September 2014, the church purchased a building from Gilford Baptist Church for 1.3 million dollars.
Today, Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church thrives. It has three priests, more than ten deacons, and around 380 active members. It operates under the Washington DC and Its Surroundings Archdiocese of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The church adheres to the administrative structure of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Ethiopia. It recognizes the spiritual leadership of the Holy Synod in Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church itself has ancient roots. It is one of the oldest apostolic churches. Tradition says that an Ethiopian Eunuch was the first apostle to the country. He spread Christianity in the 1st century AD. The structural church was established in the 4th century.
Debre Hail Kidus Raguel Church offers various spiritual services. These include Liturgy, sermons, and other programs. These are conducted by ordained clergy. The church’s weekly schedule includes Sunday morning prayers and liturgy. There are also prayer and confession programs on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Sermons are delivered on Sunday mornings and Friday evenings.
The church also has a strong focus on education. The Sunday School teaches youth and children about the EOTC religion, the Bible, and hymns. It helps young people connect with their culture. They learn to read and write in their own languages.
