Did the walls of United Parish of Bowie Presbyterian Church ever whisper secrets of faith and community? I wonder. Let’s step into a journey through time, right here at the corner of Mt. Oak and Mitchellville Roads. The United Parish of Bowie Presbyterian Church doesn’t just stand here; it breathes history. It tells a tale of shared dreams and unwavering faith.

The story begins not here, but in homes, fire halls, and even Heather Hills School. It was the 1970s. The Belair Village United Parish began as a collaborative mission. It brought together the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), the United Church of Christ (UCC), and the Episcopal Church. They envisioned a church near the planned Town Center. In 1971, the church was renamed United Parish of Bowie, or UPB. A generous gift from Westminster UCC allowed them to purchase the “Church House”. It stood at the corner of Philmont and Pennant Lanes. This house became the heart of church activities and a welcoming space for community gatherings. This era saw the birth of “Play Day”. It offered preschool children a nurturing Christian environment. It focused on education, independence, and friendship.

UPB’s journey continued with changes in leadership and locations. Worship services eventually moved to Pointer Ridge Elementary School in 1976. This was to accommodate the growing congregation and offer better public access. They adopted a unique two-part service. Families worshipped together for the first half. Then children went to the Church House for Christian Education, while adults continued worship at the school. A milestone was reached in 1977 when UPB was officially chartered and its membership exceeded 100. By 1979, UPB became self-supporting. A building committee was formed to find a permanent home. That home is where we stand today.

The ground was broken here in 1980. The building, costing $450,000 including land and furnishings, was completed in 1985. The old Church House was sold. The first service was held here, marking a new chapter in UPB’s story. UPB’s commitment to community remained strong. In 1989, the Community Service Committee began preparing meals for the Family Crisis Center and organized the first Wednesday Lenten Dinners. Through the years, UPB has seen many pastors. Each has left a unique mark on its history, from Reverend Richard Schellhase, the first pastor, to Reverend Dr. Carl O. Bickel, the founding pastor who served for over three decades.

So, as you stand before the United Parish of Bowie Presbyterian Church today, remember the journey. It’s a journey from living rooms to school halls. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and service. It continues to offer spiritual guidance and community outreach to Bowie and beyond.
