Desperate villagers turned to Kukai for help. He responded with a 21-day fire-offering prayer ritual. He placed images of the Eleven-Faced Kannon and himself into a dried-up well. Miraculously pure water surged forth. It healed the sick villagers. This event gave the area its name Nishiarai meaning new well of the west.
The temple’s official name is Gochisan Henjoin Soji-ji. It’s one of the three top Shingon Buddhist temples of the Buzan branch. For centuries people have flocked to Nishiarai Daishi. They sought protection from misfortune. They prayed for healing and good fortune. This tradition continues today. You can still see worshippers performing the Ogoma fire ceremony. Within the temple grounds lies the Nyoirin Hall. This is also known as the Women’s Hall. Here resides the Nyoirin Kannon. This Kannon is believed to grant women solace and relief. It offers protection against misfortune. Throughout the Edo period it served as a significant prayer site for women.
