A symphony of colors greets you. The Spanish Synagogue in Prague stands before you. Its Moorish Revival style is instantly captivating.

This isn’t just any synagogue. This is the youngest in Prague’s Jewish Town. Built in 1868 it replaced the Altschul the oldest synagogue in the area. The Spanish Synagogue’s name hints at its architectural inspiration. The Alhambra’s Moorish splendor clearly influenced its design. The architects Josef Niklas and Jan Bělský created a masterpiece. Antonín Baum and Bedřich Münzberger’s interior design is breathtaking. Their gilded and multi-colored parquet arabesque is simply stunning. It’s a testament to the artistry of the time.

The synagogue’s history is rich and complex. It served the local Reform congregation. Then it saw hard times. Confiscated Jewish property was stored here during World War II. Later in the 20th century the synagogue was neglected. It was closed in 1982. After the Velvet Revolution restoration began. In 1998 it reopened in all its glory. Today it houses a permanent exhibition. This exhibition details the modern history of Jews in the Czech Republic. It covers emancipation in the 1780s. It also touches on the tragic events of the 20th century.

Notice the dome above the main hall. See the three balconies surrounding it? The organ is located at the south balcony. The impressive stained glass window is a must-see. This Magen David adorned window was installed between 1882 and 1883. Below you see the monumental aron ha-kodesh the Torah ark. The ark’s design resembles a mihrab a prayer niche in a mosque. Today it has no curtain.

The Spanish Synagogue’s interior layout is noteworthy. The bimah the reading platform is at the eastern wall. This is different from older synagogues. The benches are arranged in rows not along the walls. These benches are not original. They came from a synagogue in Zruč nad Sázavou.

The Spanish Synagogue isn’t just a museum. It’s a vibrant center of cultural life. Regular chamber concerts and cultural events are held here. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Judaism in Prague. This synagogue is a symbol of resilience and beauty. It stands as a poignant reminder of the past and a vibrant celebration of the present. Let’s step inside and explore this exquisite piece of history.
