This isn’t just any bridge. Oh no. It’s a piece of Australian history. The first bridge here opened in 1889. Built by the Union Bridge Company of New York. A marvel of engineering for its time. So they built a new one. Construction started in 1939. It took years. Over 500 men worked on it. Sadly six died building this impressive structure. A plaque near the southern end remembers them. This new bridge opened in 1946. It sits 60 meters west of its predecessor. Its eight spans are sunk to depths of up to 56 meters. A testament to human ingenuity.

But there are still challenges. Recent reports showed cracking in the concrete. They found defects in the steel frame too. The weight limits on freight trains may be reduced.
