In 1851 a group unhappy with their church formed a new congregation. This was the beginning of First Trinity Lutheran Church. Located at the corner of 4th and E Streets NW in Washington DC First Trinity has a rich history.

First Trinity wasn’t always at its current location. The congregation originally met at Temperance Hall. They later built a church in 1857 at 4th and E Streets NW. They purchased the land for a mere $1062.60. Think of the value of that land today.

Over time First Trinity saw changes. Groups wanting English services left to form their own churches. Grace Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church were both spin-offs. English services began at First Trinity in 1898.

The church also planted mission congregations. Trinity in Mount Rainier Maryland was one of these. Bethlehem in Southeast Washington was another. First Trinity’s influence spread far and wide.

Despite suburban growth First Trinity remained downtown. They rebuilt their church in 1959. The current building stands as a testament to their commitment to the city.

The stained glass in the sanctuary comes from Daniel Herman Stained Glass Studio in Baltimore. This is a replacement for the original windows. Imagine the stories those original windows could tell.

First Trinity’s beliefs are rooted in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. They believe in the Triune God and proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Inclusion and justice are central to their mission.

The church has a long-standing commitment to social justice. They’ve been a Reconciling in Christ congregation since 1992. They welcome people of all sexual orientations gender identities and expressions. They also work for racial equity and actively engage in anti-racism work.

First Trinity’s history is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of faith adaptation and service to the community. It is a vibrant congregation in the heart of our nation’s capital. It continues to evolve serving as an example of God’s love and presence. First Trinity Lutheran Church stands as a beacon of hope and faith. It’s a testament to enduring faith and community resilience.
