Seven seniors. That’s how it began. In April 2000 the Markham Peoples Community Church held its first official Sunday service. It wasn’t in this impressive building. No. The service was at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Scarborough. The church then known as Malvern Chinese Free Methodist Church was small. It was a humble beginning. A testament to faith and community.

The church’s early years were marked by a deep commitment to newcomers. Many new immigrants were arriving in Canada. The church worked with agencies to provide help. They offered love care and support. It built a strong foundation. A foundation of service and compassion. This early emphasis on community established a pattern. A pattern of outreach that continues today.

Then came a significant turning point. A vision. A dream. In May 2012 the church embarked on an ambitious project. They acquired seven acres of land. They built the Markham Wesley Centre. This centre is adjacent to the church. It’s quickly become a hub for many in the Greater Toronto Area. Over 3500 members are registered. Over 300 people use it daily. The Centre expanded the church’s reach beyond its Sunday services. It showed the church’s commitment to serving the community.

The church continued to grow. In August 2018 the church building was expanded. The new worship hall accommodates 750 people. The chapel seats 160. This expansion reflects the church’s growth. It reflects its impact on the community. It also marked a significant shift. The church transitioned to being non-denominational. It adopted its current name: Markham Peoples Community Church.

Today you stand before the Markham Peoples Community Church. You see the fruits of years of dedication. Years of faith. Years of service to the community. From its humble beginnings with seven seniors to this impressive facility it’s a journey of growth. A journey of faith. A story of how a small congregation transformed a community. It’s a story that continues to unfold every Sunday and beyond. The Markham Peoples Community Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant heart of the community. It’s a beacon of hope. It’s a testament to what faith and community can achieve together.
