“Whitehaven,” a name echoing through generations. Here at Dent Family Overlook, we connect to a story far beyond this vista.
The Dent family’s journey began in Maryland in the 1650s. Colonel Thomas Dent, an ancestor, arrived and acquired land through the headright system. This system awarded land to colonists who sponsored immigrants. Thomas Dent established Guisborough. It became the family’s home.
John Addison, stepfather to Thomas Dent’s children, also had a connection to a place called Whitehaven in England. Inspired, Colonel William Dent built his own home in Maryland. He named it Whitehaven. This Maryland Whitehaven became the ancestral home.
Interestingly, another Whitehaven existed briefly in what is now Washington D.C. John Addison built it only a year after William Dent’s Whitehaven.
Colonel Frederick F. Dent, Julia Dent Grant’s father, was born into this lineage. He never lived at the original Whitehaven plantation. His father, George Dent, pursued a career as a surveyor. He surveyed Cumberland, Maryland. Frederick was born there.
Despite not living there, the Maryland Whitehaven remained a powerful symbol. When Frederick Dent acquired his farm in Missouri, he named it White Haven. It honored his family’s roots.
The original Maryland Whitehaven is lost. Today, parks and air force bases occupy the land. Yet, the Dent family’s legacy lives on. It lives on through historical records and the Missouri White Haven. The Dent Family Overlook reminds us of these interwoven stories. It spans generations and geographies.
