A sanctuary of ancient tradition. That’s what stands before you. It blends with contemporary appeal. This is St. Maurice & St. Verena Coptic Orthodox Church. It is the first missionary and intercultural Coptic Church in North America.
St. Maurice and St. Verena Coptic Orthodox Church’s story begins far from Toronto. It begins with faith and sacrifice. The tale starts in Roman times. Imagine a Coptic officer named Maurice. He and 6600 soldiers served in the Theban Legion. They were stationed near a Swiss town called Aguanum. Today, it is known as Saint Maurice.
Emperor Maximian ordered the army to offer sacrifices to Roman gods. This included killing Christians. The Theban Legion refused. Their faith was stronger than any command. Maximian ordered every tenth man killed. Still, the legion refused to comply. He ordered another decimation.
Maurice rallied his men. He inspired them to remain true to their baptismal vows. The legion sent a brave reply to Maximian. They declared they were soldiers of the true God. They owed military service to the Emperor. However, they could not renounce their Creator. They would obey him in all things not against God’s law.
Maximian was enraged. He ordered the entire legion to be slaughtered. The soldiers did not resist. They laid down their arms. They offered their necks to the executioners. They followed the example of Christ. He was led to death without protest.
Saint Verena also plays a vital role in this church’s story. She was from the Theban region of Upper Egypt. She joined the Theban Legion. She was a relative of Saint Victor. Relatives were allowed to care for the soldiers. They tended to their wounds.
After the Theban Legion’s martyrdom, Verena lived a hermit’s life. She settled near Zurich. She fasted and prayed. God performed miracles through her. She cared for young girls. She served the poor and the sick. Verena washed the wounds of lepers.
She was jailed for her faith. Saint Maurice appeared to her to console her. After her release, she continued to preach. Many converted to Christianity because of her. The Virgin Mary appeared to her at the time of her death.
The Coptic Church was established in Egypt in the first century AD. It arrived in Canada with Coptic immigration in the mid-20th century. St. Maurice and St. Verena Orthodox Church is more than a building. It is a sanctuary. It welcomes multiculturalism. It creates a space of love and peace.
