Moo. That’s the sound that first comes to mind when you see the CowParade in Prague. Not a real moo of course but the whimsical moo of a fiberglass cow transformed into a work of art.

The CowParade isn’t just a random scattering of painted cows. It’s an international public art exhibit. It began in Zurich in 1998. The idea spread quickly. Soon cities worldwide hosted their own CowParades. Prague joined the fun in 2004.

This Prague CowParade was special. It featured 204 life-sized cows. Each cow represented a different country in the European Union. Twenty-five member states plus the European Commission were represented. Czech and international artists painted them. Even students from international schools in Prague participated.

The cows weren’t just pretty faces. They were meant to raise money for charity. After months of gracing Prague’s streets and parks the cows were auctioned off. The proceeds went to good causes.

Sadly this happy story has a darker side. Many of the cows met unfortunate ends. They were vandalized. Some were seriously damaged. This caused quite a stir. Famous Czech personalities spoke out against the vandalism. Pavel Dostál the Minister of Culture called the vandals stupid. Singer Dara Rolins was annoyed by the lack of respect. Even former President Václav Havel commented on the incident. He painted one of the cows himself.

Imagine the outrage. Imagine the disappointment. These weren’t just cows. They were works of art. They represented international collaboration and goodwill. Their destruction was a blow to the spirit of the CowParade and the city of Prague.

Despite the vandalism the CowParade left its mark on Prague. It brought joy and artistic expression to the city. It also highlighted the importance of protecting public art. The story of Prague’s CowParade is a reminder that even fleeting moments of beauty can leave a lasting impression. Even if some of those moments are sadly marred by senseless acts. Look closely at the remaining cows. Let their vibrant colors remind you of a playful yet poignant moment in Prague’s history.
