The Palais Clam-Gallas stands proudly in Vienna. Its history is rich and captivating. It began life not as Clam-Gallas but as a summer residence. Franz Joseph Prince of Dietrichstein commissioned its construction around 1835. The architect Heinrich Koch designed it in the Neoclassical style popular during the Biedermeier period. The original grounds included a sprawling English garden extending towards Liechtensteinstrasse.

For many years it served as a summer retreat for the Dietrichstein family. They had owned the land since 1690. In 1850 the palace changed hands. It passed to the Clam-Gallas family through marriage. This is how it got its current name.
