High above the Ilm valley stands Taubacher Höhe. A seemingly ordinary hill it holds secrets. Secrets whispered on the wind for millennia.

Taubacher Höhe is part of Weimar. It’s nestled near the community of Mellingen. Its location is significant. It offers a breathtaking view of Schloss Belvedere. The area has been inhabited for an incredibly long time.

Long before recorded history hunters and gatherers roamed Taubacher Höhe. This was around 100000 years ago. They hunted animals. These animals included forest elephants. Rhinos bears cave lions deer and bison were also hunted. These animals thrived during a warmer period known as the Eemian interglacial. Evidence remains. A campfire with remains of hunted animals was found. Bones were used to create tools. The discovery of Neanderthal teeth here is amazing. Two molars from a fourteen-year-old and a baby tooth from a nine-year-old were found. These teeth match those of other Neanderthals. A skull burial was also discovered. It dates to the early Neolithic period. This burial is associated with a fertility cult.

Taubach the village at the base of Taubacher Höhe became internationally important. This happened between 1870 and 1900. Its history is fascinating. In 1876 the German Society for Anthropology Ethnology and Prehistory visited. Rudolf Virchow was among them. Discoveries in the Weimar travertines influenced the founding of the Museum of Pre- and Protohistory of Thuringia. This museum opened in 1889.

But Taubacher Höhe’s story extends beyond prehistory. Its elevated position makes it a silent witness. It silently observes the unfolding of history in Weimar. The ebb and flow of life in Taubach. The rise and fall of empires.

From the summit of Taubacher Höhe you can almost touch the past. You can feel the presence of those who walked these lands long ago. The weight of history settles on your shoulders. It becomes a tangible thing. A palpable connection to the past. A reminder that we are but a small part of a much larger story. A story that continues to be written. Even now.

Today Taubacher Höhe remains a place of quiet beauty. A place to reflect. A place to appreciate the rich tapestry of human history. It’s a place to ponder the long and continuing story of this small hill. A silent observer of centuries of change.
