Consider a crisp apple, its skin gleaming under the Trier sun. This is where our story begins at Viez- und Schnapsherstellung. We are diving deep into the heart of Viez culture.

Viez is more than just apple wine. It is a tradition deeply rooted in this region. Its story is one of resourcefulness, community, and a little bit of rebellion.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the Roman soldiers stationed here, longing for the wines of their homeland. Unable to grow grapes immediately, they discovered a local alternative apple wine. Legend says they called it “Vice Vinum” substitute wine. Whether that’s true or not, the name Viez stuck.

For centuries, Viez was the drink of the common folk in the Trier region. It was cheaper than wine and more accessible than beer. Farmers planted apple trees. They produced Viez in their homes. It became a staple of rural life.

In the 17th century, farmers planted more apple trees in monastery vineyards. The monasteries got angry, because unlike wine, apples weren’t taxed. This led to a court case. It shows how important Viez was to the local economy and culture.

During French occupation, officials encouraged fruit wine production. This shows Viez’s growing significance. By 1787, Trier limited how much Apfelwein citizens could bring into the city. Each person was allowed 160 liters. Anything more was taxed. People were so upset that the limit doubled two years later.

The Viez tradition almost disappeared in the 20th century. Farming practices changed. People had access to other drinks. Today, a revival is happening thanks to groups like the Trierer Viezbruderschaft. This “Viez Brotherhood” preserves Viez culture.

The Viez Brotherhood was founded in 2010. They are dedicated to preserving Viez traditions. They organize the biannual Viezfest in Trier. The Viezfest transforms Cathedral Square into a cider garden. In early 2024, they successfully added Viez to Germany’s list of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

What makes Viez different from other apple wines? According to Ernst Mettlach of the Viez Brotherhood, Viez-making was a domestic, familial tradition. Unlike Frankfurt, there were no large, commercial producers.

Dirk Kirsten of Lampadener Viezjungen believes that properly matured Viez is comparable to Hessian cider. The sour taste is because of apple varieties. Some seasoned Viez drinkers prefer this acidity.

The Viez is traditionally drunk from a white, handled mug called a Porz. The oldest Viezporz was made between 1876 and 1893 by Villeroy and Boch.

Viez is deeply rooted in the people here. It is a unique part of their homeland. The boundary of Viez production aligns with the Mosel-Franconian dialect.

UNESCO recognized Viez as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. This strengthens biodiversity. It also preserves knowledge about fruit trees. The Viez region stretches across the Saargau. It goes to the German-Luxembourg border area. It also covers part of Rhineland-Palatinate up to Trier.

The 175 kilometer long Viez route leads from Merzig to Trier. You can find cideries, farm shops, and restaurants along the way. Viez has become milder. It is more appealing to connoisseurs. The former poor people’s drink is now culture.

The Viez on your tongue carries centuries of history. It speaks of Roman soldiers. It tells of farmers fighting for their livelihoods. It echoes with the laughter of neighbors sharing a drink. As you savor this taste of Trier, remember that you are partaking in a living tradition. It is a tradition that continues to evolve. It also remains deeply connected to this land and its people.
