“Tokyo’s answer to Central Park” is how some describe the haven we’re about to explore. This is Naitomachi, home to the remarkable Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Once a part of an Edo era feudal lord’s home, this space opened to the public in 1949. Since then, it has been a refuge for Tokyoites. They come to enjoy nature in the city’s center.

Shinjuku Gyoen combines three distinct garden styles. There is a Japanese traditional garden, a formal garden, and a landscape garden. These feature sprawling lawns and natural landscaping. The result is awesome.

In spring, 900 cherry trees tinge the park pink. Their blooms are delicate and beautiful. During the fall, the garden shows some of the best autumn colors. There is also a Chrysanthemum Exhibition related to the imperial family. The variety of plants in the gardens and greenhouse make this place worth visiting any time.

Located a short walk from Shinjuku Station, the garden is easily accessible. As you enter, the city noise fades. Bird song replaces it. It is a tranquil spot for a morning or afternoon stroll.

There are a few rules to keep in mind during your visit to Naitomachi. No alcoholic drinks are permitted in the park. This includes beer. Also, running is only allowed on the designated loop. Groups of ten or more are not allowed to run together. Running is not allowed during the Spring Special Opening Period. This is from March 25 to April 24. It includes the cherry blossom season.

The garden is open from 09:00 to 16:30. Admittance is until 16:00. Tickets cost 200 Yen for adults and 50 Yen for children. Note that the garden is closed on Mondays. There are exceptions to this rule. Check the official website for details.

Don’t miss capturing the views of skyscrapers. They are framed by the garden’s ancient trees. Remember that picnicking under the cherry blossoms is popular. Also note that smoking cigarettes and using sports equipment or musical instruments are prohibited.

Shinjuku Gyoen in Naitomachi offers a unique escape. It is a blend of nature, history, and culture in the heart of Tokyo. Take a moment to breathe and appreciate this green oasis. It’s a testament to Tokyo’s ability to blend urban life with tranquil nature.
