Hidden in plain sight, Tempe High School has witnessed the ebb and flow of Sydney life since 1874. Tempe High School wasn’t always the institution you see today. Originally, a modest sandstone cottage served as both primary and secondary school. This cottage, tucked away on the current campus, whispers tales of early education in Tempe. The school’s motto, “Labora Fortiter” which means “Work Hard,” reflects the dedication to learning instilled in generations of students. Tempe High School faced a challenge in 2004. Declining enrolments threatened its existence, alongside Dulwich Hill, Marrickville, and Newtown high schools. A proposal to merge them into a multi-campus college failed. Instead, Tempe High School reinvented itself in 2005. It adopted a dual modality, becoming partially selective based on academic merit while continuing to serve local students. Tempe High School boasts some notable alumni. Cricketer Bob Simpson honed his skills on the school’s playing fields. Entertainer Col Joye likely graced the school halls with his early performances. Even a religious leader, Coptic Orthodox Bishop Anba Suriel, walked these halls. Today, Tempe High School thrives with around 900 students, embodying a blend of academic pursuit and community spirit. It stands as a testament to resilience and adaptation in the ever-changing landscape of education.
