Built in 1946 Johan Skytteskolan stands proudly in Langbro Stockholm. Its main building a testament to architect Paul Hedqvist’s vision. Hedqvist a master of functionalist design used yellow brick. This was a favorite material for him in the 1940s and early 1950s. The school’s design is striking. A long building houses classrooms a hall and an auditorium.
Johan Skytteskolan wasn’t always called Johan Skytteskolan. Initially opened in 1948 it was known as Langbrodals folkskola. The name changed in 1997 honoring Johan Skytte. He was a significant figure in Swedish history. A statesman and educator Skytte’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Uppsala University. He even established a professorship there.
The school’s history is rich. Construction on the main building began in 1946. It was a relatively quick process completing in 1948. The planning however started much earlier back in 1939. The gymnasium and auditorium were added later in 1955. Johan Skytteskolan continues to evolve. A new building for preschool to grade 6 opened in 2019. This building designed by Stadion Arkitekter can accommodate 630 students.
A new sports hall Vasterangshallen completed in 2020 further enhances the school’s facilities. This modern addition designed by Cedervall Arkitekter complements two existing sports halls. In 2011 Johan Skytteskolan merged with Ekangens skola expanding its reach and student population. The school today educates students from preschool through ninth grade. In the 2023-2024 school year over 1150 students attended Johan Skytteskolan. This makes it a vibrant hub of learning within the community. Johan Skytteskolan stands as a symbol of education and community growth. Its history blends seamlessly with the modern era.
