Located in Ichikawa City Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo the Shinhama Imperial Wild Duck Preserve is one of two Imperial Wild Duck Preserves in Japan. It’s a significant location for the Imperial family.
The Shinhama Imperial Wild Duck Preserve has a special pond called Motodamari. It’s about 13000 square meters. Over 2000 wild ducks and other birds visit during their winter migration. The preserve is more than just a haven for wildlife. It’s a place where history and romance intertwine.
Imagine a secret proposal. In October 1992 then-Crown Prince Naruhito proposed to Masako Owada there. He visited secretly without security. He arrived in a vehicle used by Imperial Household Agency staff. Their engagement remained a secret for a short while.
The duck-netting season at the Shinhama Imperial Wild Duck Preserve runs from mid-November to mid-February. It’s a time when the grounds open to guests. Domestic and foreign visitors attend by the Emperor’s permission. The event features a traditional duck-netting ceremony. The ducks are gently netted and released unharmed. It’s a beautiful blend of tradition and respect for nature.
In 2025 Princess Aiko hosted a reception at the preserve for the diplomatic corps. Princess Kako also participated. They welcomed ambassadors from 12 countries. The reception marked the first time Imperial family members had participated since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Shinhama Imperial Wild Duck Preserve is more than just a beautiful place.
