Founded by Rabbi Bentzion and Zlata Geisinsky it started as a small center serving a relatively secular Jewish community. Zlata Geisinsky a gifted educator and community leader played an instrumental role in building this institution. Her dedication was legendary. She tirelessly worked to build connections foster a sense of belonging and inspire a deeper connection to Judaism. She ran the local mikveh the only one serving the wider Washington area outside of Baltimore and Silver Spring.
Zlata’s legacy extends far beyond the physical building. Her work spurred the creation of a Hebrew school a thriving Gan Israel day camp and weekly adult education classes. The synagogue now holds a daily minyan a testament to its growth and influence. After her sudden passing in 2010 her son Sender and his wife Nechamie took on the mantle of leadership. Their efforts have resulted in astonishing growth including a threefold increase in Hebrew school enrollment.
The community is expanding. A new modern center is under construction. It will boast a larger sanctuary and additional classrooms. A new Chabad couple will join in the fall further enhancing the center’s offerings. The new facility will bear the name of Zlata Geisinsky honoring her profound contribution. A new preschool named Gan Zlata or Zlata’s Garden will soon open its doors.
