The pink-brown exterior was replaced with a more modern, darker shade. New skylights were installed, and the links between the buildings were also re-waterproofed. The renovation also addressed security concerns around the mayor and council members’ offices. Each office boasts a private courtyard. These courtyards received a fresh look with new cladding and paint. The workers had to navigate strict security protocols to complete this task. They were often limited to specific times of the day. At the base of the Cape Town Civic Centre, the old tiling was replaced with vandal-proof panels. This system of vitreous enamelled steel provides robust protection against graffiti and other forms of vandalism. The refurbishment also extended to the links connecting the Podium and Tower Blocks. Even the link to the Artscape Theatre received attention. This meticulous process involved removing and replacing pavers and art sculptures while preserving their original patterns.
