Hawkesbury Heights is nestled within the City of Blue Mountains, a small town with a big view. It’s situated between Yarramundi and Winmalee, with Yellow Rock to the south. The only road in and out is Hawkesbury Road, which transforms into Springwood Road as you head east. Hawkesbury Heights officially became its own town in the mid-1980s. Before that, it shared a postcode with Springwood and Winmalee.
Hawkesbury Heights is perched 264 meters above sea level. The landscape is dramatic. A creek carves its way along the southern edge, flowing west-northeast, while the imposing Hawkesbury Ridge stands guard to the north. The terrain drops sharply to the east where Hawkesbury-Springwood Road has cut a pass through the mountains. This road, winding down from Hawkesbury Lookout, is known for its stunning views. But be warned, it also experiences occasional rockfalls. If you continue along Hawkesbury Road, it will eventually lead you to Yarramundi, Agnes Banks, and finally to Richmond, approximately a 15-minute drive from the lookout.
The heart of Hawkesbury Heights is arguably the lookout. From here, you can take in panoramic views of the Nepean River. Your eyes can sweep across to the Penrith International Regatta Centre. You can even see the vast plains stretching towards Sydney, all while being surrounded by the tranquil bushland below. The lookout is more than just a viewpoint. It offers picnic and BBQ facilities. It’s the perfect spot to relax and savor the fresh mountain air. The Winmalee Rural Fire Brigade also uses this area for training. This ensures they’re prepared for any emergencies in this unique environment.
Hawkesbury Heights isn’t just about stunning views. It’s also home to a newly rebuilt youth hostel, formally known as the North Springwood Youth Hostel, offering affordable accommodation for travelers. And for nature enthusiasts, there’s a Flora and Fauna Reserve waiting to be explored. The 2021 census painted a picture of Hawkesbury Heights as a close-knit community of 468 residents. Most, a significant 83.8%, were born in Australia. English is the primary language for 91.5% of the population. Families are at the heart of this town. Couples with children represent 58.3% of residents, while 30.7% are couples without children.
