A century ago a small wooden church stood here. This is the Island Bay Presbyterian Church. It wasn’t much to look at just a simple structure. Yet it held a community. It held dreams hopes and prayers.

The Island Bay Presbyterian Church IBPC opened in 1898. About 130 people squeezed inside. Many stood at the doorway. The Reverend James Patterson conducted the first service. He was the minister of St John’s Church in Willis Street.

For years IBPC was part of St James’ in Newtown. Rev Shirer served both congregations for 30 years. That’s the longest ministry in IBPC’s history. Island Bay was rural then. The Sunday school thrived with 60 children. Adult membership was just 11. Services were at 3 pm Sunday school at 10:30 am. Tennis courts stood where the current church stands. They were a big part of church life for 60 years.

In 1918 IBPC became independent. It had a strong Sunday school and youth groups. The current church building was constructed in 1965. The old wooden church became a hall. This hall was demolished in 1992. A new hall and lounge were built.

Sir Arnold and Lady Frances Nordmeyer were notable members. Sir Arnold was a Presbyterian minister. He was also a Labour MP. He was key in creating New Zealand’s social welfare system. He introduced free healthcare and pensions. Lady Frances oversaw yearly church productions.

Today IBPC focuses on connecting people with God and each other. It’s a place of faith community and action. The church supports social housing in South Wellington. It provides meals and collects food. It also has global mission work in Myanmar India and Vanuatu. This small church has a big heart a long history and a bright future. This is more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith community and service.
