Crescent School stands as an independent boys’ school. It is located here on Bayview Avenue in Toronto. Since 1913, Crescent School has focused on character development. This focus is deeply embedded in the school’s DNA.
The school was established by John William James. He opened the doors to a small group of boys at his home on Rosedale Road.
In 1933, Susan Massey donated her mansion. It also included 40 acres of land to Crescent School. This generous gift allowed the school to expand. The property was located near Victoria Park Avenue and Dawes Road. The school remained there until 1969. Afterward, the property was sold to developers. They built the Crescent Town neighborhood. By 1970, Crescent had moved to its current location on Bayview Avenue.
Crescent School operates a house system. Every student is assigned to one of six houses. These houses are named after Canadian explorers. They are Cartier Hudson Mackenzie Massey Simcoe and Wolfe. The houses compete in athletic and academic activities throughout the year.
Crescent School has expanded its facilities over the years. The Field House opened in 2002. It provides a large space for sports. In 2004, the Centre for Creative Learning opened. It features a professionally equipped theater. Innes Field with its artificial turf surface opened in 2008. The Lau Family Wing opened in 2011. The Latifi Family Commons opened in 2014. It houses University Counselling and Student Services. The Margaret Donnelly Library serves boys in Grades 3 to 6. The Middle School Upper School Library is designed for older boys.
Athletics are an important part of Crescent School life. Teams compete in various sports. These sports include basketball hockey baseball and track and field. Other sports are rugby volleyball badminton tennis swimming soccer cross country running squash golf and Ultimate Frisbee.
Several Crescent School teachers have received awards. Sylvia Duckworth won a National Certificate of Excellence. David Grant received a Certificate of Achievement. Michael Jansen was awarded the Chemical Institute of Canada’s Beaumier Award. Natalie Vera received the Prime Minister’s Award of Excellence STEM Certificate of Achievement.
Crescent School boasts many notable alumni. These alumni include George Hees Neil Lumsden and Christophe Beck. Evan Solomon David Harlock and Rob Coleman also attended Crescent. Kevin Abrams Chilly Gonzales Gabriel Leung and Rob Stewart are alumni. Ted Livingston Sam Greenwood Nicholas Latifi and Xaivian Lee are also alumni.
Crescent School offers a summer academic program. It is available to all high school students. Summer camps are also available for younger children. The Successful Start program is exclusive to Crescent students.
