Have you ever walked across a bridge that shimmers like a rainbow? The Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo is just that. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a symbol of modern Tokyo spanning the northern Tokyo Bay. Connecting Shibaura Pier to the Odaiba waterfront it’s a masterpiece of engineering and a stunning visual spectacle.
Built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries the Rainbow Bridge took six years to construct. Construction began in 1987 and finished in 1993. Its official name is quite a mouthful: Tōkyō Kō Renrakukyō. But everyone calls it the Rainbow Bridge. The name was chosen by public vote. Can you imagine the excitement?
This isn’t just a roadway. The Rainbow Bridge carries three transportation lines on two decks. The upper deck is for cars. The Shuto Expressway’s Daiba Route roars across it daily. The lower deck is more interesting. The Yurikamome rapid transit system runs down the center. Walkways on either side offer breathtaking views. But there’s a rule. Light motorcycles under 50cc are banned. So are pillion passengers on any motorcycle.
These walkways aren’t always open. Summer hours are 9 am to 9 pm. Winter hours are shorter. They close at 6 pm. That’s because even though the walkway is always there the sun sets earlier in winter. You have to push your bicycle. Riding is not permitted.
The towers are white. This was a deliberate design choice. The white harmonizes beautifully with the Tokyo skyline. At night the bridge transforms. Lights on the supporting wires illuminate the bridge in red white and green. They use solar power collected during the day. Isn’t that impressive?
From the north walkway you can see Tokyo Tower and the inner harbor. From the south walkway Tokyo Bay and occasionally even Mount Fuji are visible. What a view. You can easily reach the Rainbow Bridge from Tamachi Station or Shibaura-futō Station.
