OCAD University, also known as OCAD U, has a rich history dating back to 1876. It started as the Ontario School of Art. The Ontario Society of Artists founded it. Their goal was to provide professional artistic training. They also wanted to further art education in Ontario.
Originally located at 14 King Street West, the Ontario School of Art began with only 14 students. Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes. It was renamed the Toronto Art School in 1886. Later, it became the Central Ontario School of Art and Industrial Design in 1890.
In 1912, the institution received a provincial charter. It was then incorporated as the Ontario College of Art. George Agnew Reid became its first principal. He designed the first building owned by the college. This was the first building in Canada built specifically for art and design education. This building is still in use today.
The Ontario College of Art established a design school in 1945. This broadened its educational mandate. The institution continued to evolve. In 1996, it was renamed the Ontario College of Art & Design. This change reflected its expanded focus.
The early 2000s marked a significant period of transformation for OCAD. In 2002, the institution was granted university status. It began conferring Bachelor of Fine Art and Bachelor of Design degrees. The iconic Sharp Centre for Design opened in 2004. This was made possible through investments. Alum Rosalie Sharp was named Chancellor that same year.
In 2008, OCAD University accepted its first cohort of graduate students. It also began offering continuing education programs. In 2010, the institution officially became OCAD University. This reflected its growth and development.
OCAD U does not have student residences on campus. However, the OCAD Student Centre provides resources. Students can use these resources to find off-campus accommodations.
OCAD University has a strong commitment to sustainability. The Sustainability Committee works to implement sustainable practices. OCAD University received a silver rating for its sustainability practices. This was awarded by the AASHE.
OCAD University is organized into three faculties. These are the Faculty of Art, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science, and the Faculty of Design. As of 2022, the university offers 18 undergraduate programs and seven graduate programs.
OCAD University boasts a diverse range of galleries. These galleries exhibit art from students, faculty, and alumni. They also showcase work from other professional artists.
The OCAD Student Union represents the student body. They provide various services. These include academic advocacy and legal services. They also provide student grants.
OCAD University has a long list of notable alumni. Many have gained prominence in visual arts and design. They include members of the Group of Seven. They also include members of the Painters Eleven.
