What secrets does Franconia hold? Franconia, Virginia, whispers tales of transformation, from a quiet 19th-century railway stop to a bustling suburb of Washington D.C. Franconia wasn’t always the vibrant community you see today. It began its life in the 1870s as a humble station on the RF&P Railroad. The name “Franconia” itself comes from the historic “Frankhonia Farm.” William Fowle, an Alexandria merchant, purchased the land in 1859. His son later sold a portion to the railway company, and thus, Franconia was born. This small station even housed the Garfield Post Office on and off between 1881 and 1907. The original station, near Fleet Drive, burned down in 1903 and was rebuilt across Franconia Road. It served the community faithfully until around 1953. Today, a historical marker commemorates its existence near the Franconia Governmental Center. The heart of old Franconia pulsed at Wards Corner. This bustling intersection of Franconia Road and Old Rolling Road was home to a gas station, grocery store, a bar, a movie theater, and even a dance hall. Sadly, a devastating fire in 1959 swept through Wards Corner, leaving nothing but memories. Franconia has also witnessed moments of conflict. During the Civil War, in January 1862, a skirmish erupted near Potter’s Hill. Confederate Colonel Wade Hampton III, pursued by Union cavalry, narrowly avoided an ambush thanks to a Texas scout. The ensuing firefight resulted in several wounded soldiers before the Confederates retreated. Potter’s Hill later held three schoolhouses, the last burning down in 1932. The location is now home to the Hilltop Village Center. Franconia’s story is also one of faith and education. The Laurel Grove Colored School and Church, established in the 1880s for former slaves, served the community for generations. The school operated until 1932, and the church, sadly, was destroyed by fire in 2004. The school building and cemetery remain, testaments to Franconia’s rich history. Several other churches have graced Franconia, including Sharon Chapel, founded in 1848, and Olivet Episcopal Church. The Franconia Museum, located in the Franconia Governmental Center, preserves and interprets the community’s captivating story. From a simple railway stop, Franconia has blossomed into a vibrant community, a testament to its resilience and the enduring spirit of its people.
