Hidden amongst the rugged beauty of Trieste’s Karst plateau, lie remnants of a forgotten tribute. The Vedetta Giubileare Francesco Giuseppe I, once a majestic tower of white stone, stood proudly overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. Built in 1908 by the Club Touristi Triestini, it was a testament to sixty years of Emperor Franz Joseph’s reign. The Vedetta Giubileare Francesco Giuseppe I, designed by architect Carlo Hesky, soared 11 meters into the sky. Its construction was funded by public subscription, showcasing the community’s admiration for their emperor. The Vedetta Giubileare Francesco Giuseppe I, however, was not destined to stand the test of time. In 1922, after surviving the First World War unscathed, its ownership was transferred to the Società Alpina delle Giulie. They renamed it “Vedetta Italia,” a poignant reflection of the changing political landscape. Sadly, the Vedetta Giubileare Francesco Giuseppe I met its demise during the Second World War. In 1944, German forces demolished it, fearing it would become a target for Allied forces. Even the stones were removed, erasing it from the landscape. Today, what you see before you are the ruins of the Vedetta Giubileare Francesco Giuseppe I, a silent reminder of a bygone era. Though the original structure is lost, its story echoes in the wind that sweeps across the Karst plateau. The Vedetta Giubileare Francesco Giuseppe I, while physically gone, remains a part of Trieste’s rich and sometimes turbulent history.
