Thousands of starfish once thrived in Starfish Bay. Pollution sadly wiped them out. Starfish Bay a small sandy cove near Ma On Shan suffered. Untreated sewage from Tai Po and Sha Tin polluted the water. This sadly killed all the starfish many years ago.
But hope arrived. A project to restore Starfish Bay’s marine life began. Environmentalists and schoolchildren worked for two years. They transferred 3000 starfish from Long Harbour in Sai Kung Country Park. This was the culmination of their efforts. The water quality in Starfish Bay had improved. It was once again suitable for starfish.
A pilot project started in September of last year. About 100 starfish were moved to Starfish Bay. Long Harbour had a huge population of at least 300,000 starfish. The move was a success.
The final transfer of starfish completed the project. Brownies and Cubs helped. They brought the project to fruition. Starfish Bay now has a viable starfish population again. It’s a testament to the dedication of so many people. The bay’s ecosystem is slowly recovering. The future of Starfish Bay looks brighter. The bay is a symbol of hope and environmental restoration. It’s a reminder that even after significant damage we can restore nature.
