Could a single word hold the power to transform a nation? Here at 日蓮宗 大綱教会, the echoes of such a word, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, still resonate. This unassuming temple in Tokyo holds a surprising connection to a pivotal moment in Japanese history. 日蓮宗 大綱教会 represents a branch of Nichiren Buddhism, a sect that arose during the tumultuous Kamakura period. Nichiren, born in 1222, embarked on a 20-year quest to understand the Buddhist teachings prevalent in Japan. He emerged convinced of the Lotus Sutra’s supremacy. In 1253, he returned to Seicho-ji Temple and declared Nam-myoho-renge-kyo from atop Mount Kiyosumi. He took the name Nichiren, meaning “Sun Lotus,” symbolizing his vision for Japan as the center of a Buddhist revival. Nichiren’s bold pronouncements, especially his criticism of the then-popular Pure Land Buddhism, earned him powerful enemies. He was exiled, nearly executed, and faced constant threats. Yet, these trials only strengthened his resolve. On Sado Island, during his second exile, Nichiren developed key tenets of his teachings. He inscribed the first Mandala Gohonzon, an object of devotion central to his Buddhism. He emphasized the importance of facing adversity and propagating the Lotus Sutra, even under persecution. He saw himself as fulfilling the prophecies of the Lotus Sutra, enduring hardship for the sake of the true teachings. Nichiren returned to Kamakura, pardoned but still unheeded by the government. He retired to Mount Minobu, where, through prolific letter writing, he continued to guide his followers and refine his unique form of Buddhism. 日蓮宗 大綱教会, like other Nichiren Buddhist temples, embodies his legacy. The simple act of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, he taught, connects individuals to the life-affirming power of the Lotus Sutra. It’s a practice meant to empower individuals and ultimately transform society, fulfilling Nichiren’s vision of a world at peace.
