Both attempts failed to confirm Krone’s idea. He suggested a connection between Areias de Baixo and Ressurgencia das Areias das Aguas Quentes back in 1909.
It wasn’t until 1975 that the connection was finally proven. Pierre Martin used fluorescein dye. He put it in the stream inside Areias de Baixo cave. The dye reappeared in Ressurgencia das Areias das Aguas Quentes.
Gruta das Areias is part of the A\u00e7ungui group of caverns. These formed between 1.6 billion and 539 million years ago. That’s a history stretching back to the Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic eras.
