Hanahata Elementary School began as the Minami Adachi Ward Hanahata Ordinary Elementary School. It opened its doors in 1900. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 damaged the school. The western wing collapsed. Three classrooms were lost. Reconstruction followed in stages. The western wing was rebuilt in wood in 1938. A steel-frame structure emerged in 1963. This new building had three floors.

In 1965 the school was divided into Hanahata First Elementary School and others. In 1972 they removed a wooden building. Six classrooms disappeared. They were replaced by a modern six classroom steel structure in 1973. The school playground was complete by 1978. Hanahata Elementary School continued to flourish. Another school Hanahata Sixth Elementary School opened in 1979.

The school celebrated its centennial in 2000. A special ceremony took place. The event marked a milestone in its journey. Today Hanahata Elementary School thrives.
