Archaeological research reveals much about Logie Rocks. The Logies Rock Shelter was studied by archaeologists. They found red ochre and ochre stained grinding stones. Pottery, beads and shell middens were also discovered. You can still see these shell middens outside the cave entrances.
The smooth granite cave floor tells a story. It speaks of many people using the cave over thousands of years. Imagine the rituals and gatherings that once took place here.
The Great Motherstone stands near the cave on Logie Rocks. Dean Liprini’s archaeoastronomical research sheds light on its significance. It is the largest standing monolithic stone on this mini peninsula.
Its shape is a diamond lozenge when viewed from west to east. This diamond shape symbolizes the female reproductive area. A seam of white quartz winds around the Motherstone. It anchors into a blackened navel-like energy point. This represents the umbilical cord and fertility.
Looking from north to south, the Great Motherstone resembles a huge breast. It even has a nipplecap. This further reinforces the site’s association with fertility. The use of red ochre confirms ancient ceremonial practices at this important site.
The top of the Motherstone is illuminated by the first rays of the Summer Solstice sunrise. The light passes through the gateway between Little Lions Head and the southwest corner of Table Mountain.
