Do you know that Lahovice became part of Prague in 1968? This charming district holds more history than you might imagine. Lahovice is a cadastral district of Prague. It sits in the southwest of the Czech capital.

Let’s explore Lahovice together. It is located in the Prague 16 district. Lahovice covers a modest area of about 2.03 square kilometers. Despite its small size, Lahovice has a distinct identity.

Once upon a time, Lahovice was known by its German name, Lahowitz. In 2015, it had a population of just 330 inhabitants. As of 2021, the population grew slightly to 381. The density is about 190 people per square kilometer.

Here in Lahovice, the Berounka and Vltava rivers meet. This confluence marks a significant geographical point. The district includes two settlements. These are Lahovice and Lahovičky.

Imagine the early medieval period. This area was a burial ground. Between 1954 and 1960, nearly 400 graves were found here. These findings provide insights into early Bohemian history.

Researchers like Zdeňka Krumphanzlová have studied the Lahovice burial ground extensively. Her work includes anthropological analyses. There are also detailed plans and photo documentation.

The book “Early Medieval Burial Ground in Prague-Lahovice” details these discoveries. It includes a CD-ROM with Krumphanzlová’s manuscript. It also contains an electronic version of the overall plan.

Lahovice may be small. However, its history as a burial ground and its location at the meeting of two rivers give it a unique charm. Take a moment to appreciate Lahovice’s quiet streets. Remember its past as we continue our tour.
