High on a plateau 985 meters above sea level sits Leura. A haven nestled in the heart of the Blue Mountains. Leura is more than just a town. It’s a living testament to history. It’s a place where the whispers of Aboriginal history blend with the echoes of European settlement.

For over 12 000 years the Dharug and Gundungurra people called this land home. Their presence is subtly woven into the very fabric of Leura. Archaeological discoveries at Lyrebird Dell speak volumes. They reveal a rich and ancient past. A past that predates European exploration by millennia.

The first Europeans arrived in 1813. Gregory Blaxland William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth forged a path. They were followed by George Evans and William Cox’s road-building party. These explorers carved a way through the rugged landscape. They laid the foundation for the town we see today.

The arrival of the railway in 1867-68 marked a turning point. The construction of the line brought permanent settlers. Gatekeepers became the area’s first European residents. The discovery of coal added to the town’s growth. A colliery near the present-day golf course briefly fuelled Leura’s expansion.

The name Leura first appeared on a subdivision plan in 1881. The name’s origin remains a mystery. Some believe it’s an Aboriginal word for lava. Others suggest it’s linked to Frederick Clissold’s daughter. Regardless its origins the name stuck.

Leura’s development accelerated. The opening of Leura Coffee Palace on Christmas Eve 1892 marked a milestone. The establishment of a railway platform in 1891 and a new railway station in 1902 cemented Leura’s place on the map. The Mall became the commercial heart. Most of its buildings date from 1900 to the 1920s. The town’s rich heritage is carefully preserved. The historic post office still stands proudly. It now shares space with a real estate agency. The Alexandra Hotel offers breathtaking views.

Leura is home to many stunning gardens. These elegant landscapes bear the imprint of Danish-born landscape gardener Paul Sorenson. His work transformed Leura into a garden village. Leuralla a historic mansion once housed the NSW Toy and Railway Museum. The museum closed in 2022. The property is now for sale. Everglades Gardens another major attraction showcases European-style gardens. It also includes a home designed by Henri van de Velde.

Today Leura continues to thrive. It offers a unique blend of history nature and modern amenities. The Leura Gardens Festival attracts visitors from far and wide. It’s a testament to Leura’s enduring charm. It’s a testament to its place as a cherished destination in the heart of the Blue Mountains.
