He was a pioneer, an artist, and a visionary who shaped the world of Italian alpinism. Born in Trieste in 1901, Comici’s early passion was spelunking, exploring the dark depths of the Carso caves. This experience forged in him the calm and self-control that would later define his climbing style. He transitioned to climbing in 1928, quickly making a name for himself in the Julian Alps with daring ascents of Jof Fuart. Comici’s dedication went beyond personal achievement. He co-founded Italy’s first climbing school in 1929, sharing his knowledge and passion with aspiring climbers. This commitment to education mirrored his belief in alpinism not just as a sport, but as a way of life and a form of artistic expression. Comici championed an elegant and safe climbing style, emphasizing the “line of the falling drop” as the ideal route. His innovative techniques, such as the “contrast” method and his approach to artificial climbing, pushed the boundaries of what was considered possible.
