Here lies Elsa Brändström, a woman whose life was dedicated to helping others. Her grave is nestled among scores of others in the Norra begravningsplatsen in Stockholm. But this is no ordinary grave. This is the resting place of a woman known as the “Angel of Siberia”. Elsa Brändström began her life in St. Petersburg, Russia, born into a family of Swedish diplomats. She was moved to action during World War I, when she witnessed German prisoners of war being sent to the Siberian tundra. The sight spurred her to abandon a comfortable life and become a nurse, tending to those in need. She used her family’s connections with the Swedish and Danish Embassies to gain access to the prisoners. Her efforts were greatly appreciated by the prisoners who lovingly called her “The Angel of Siberia.” Following the war, she continued her work, providing care to orphans of German soldiers who had been killed in the war and Russian prisoners of war. She later married Robert Uhlig and moved to Germany, where she continued to serve the destitute. The rise of Hitler forced Elsa and her husband to flee Germany for safety in America. She died in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For her selfless work, Elsa Brändström left behind a legacy of kindness and compassion. Though buried here, her story continues to resonate around the world, inspiring people to strive for humanity and help those in need.
