In 1973, a beacon of faith found a new home. The Epworth United Methodist Church, facing closure in Northeast Washington D.C., merged with Ryland Church. Ryland Church itself had a rich history. Founded in 1843 in Southwest Washington, it later moved to Southeast and built its current neo-Gothic sanctuary in 1944. The Epworth United Methodist Church became part of this evolving story. Just a few years later, the congregation of the 133-year-old Anacostia United Methodist Church joined Ryland Epworth, creating a vibrant, diverse community. Today, the Epworth United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue SE and Branch Avenue SE, continues to thrive. It serves the Hillcrest and Randle Highlands neighborhoods, holding Sunday services at 9:30 am. The church’s vision is clear: to be a growing, Christ-centered community that equips disciples to spread the word of Jesus Christ. This vision is embodied by their pastor, Rev. Dr. Samuel Holdbrook-Smith. Born in Ghana, Dr. Holdbrook-Smith brought his powerful preaching and teaching to the Epworth United Methodist Church in 2018. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Liberty University and a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary. He leads his congregation with the support of his wife, Marjorie. The Epworth United Methodist Church’s journey reflects the resilience and adaptability of faith communities. It stands as a testament to the power of merging histories and shared beliefs, creating a stronger, more vibrant future. The church’s story continues to unfold, welcoming all who seek a spiritual home.
