“Imagine a church built from the ruins of war” This is the Friedenskirche in Stralsund. Its very stones whisper tales of resilience. Located in the Frankensiedlung district it stands as a testament to faith and hope.

After the devastating bombing of Stralsund in 1944 the old Jakobikirche lay in ruins. The St Jakobi/Heilgeist congregation needed a new space for worship. Plans for a new church in the Frankensiedlung had existed for years. The war accelerated their implementation.

The Friedenskirche wasn’t just any church. It was a product of the post-war Notkirchenprogramm a program to quickly rebuild places of worship. Designed by the renowned architect Otto Bartning it was built between 1950 and 1951. Its inauguration was on July 22 1951.

Bartning’s design was ingenious. He developed four basic designs for these emergency churches. The Friedenskirche is a slightly modified version of his ‘Type B’ plan. This plan notably omitted a separate altar area.

What truly sets the Friedenskirche apart is its construction. The wooden framework is visible. It stretches from the foundation to the roof. The exterior walls? They’re made of unplastered bricks. These bricks are salvaged from Stralsund’s war-torn buildings.

The church walls don’t just hold bricks they hold history. Each brick speaks of destruction and rebirth. They’re a poignant reminder of the city’s past. A tangible link between the devastation and the subsequent reconstruction. It is a silent witness. A testament to the spirit of Stralsund.

In 1952 a separate congregation was established for the Friedenskirche. Over time this congregation merged with others. Today it is part of the larger Heilgeist/Frieden/Voigdehagen parish.

Beyond its architectural significance the Friedenskirche stands as a symbol of peace. Its very name Friedenskirche means Church of Peace. It stands as a symbol of hope and faith in the face of adversity. It serves as a lasting reminder of the city’s recovery and spirit. A peaceful sanctuary offering solace to all who enter.
