Amidst the tranquil beauty of Tsing Shan Monastery, stands a silent sentinel: the 香海名山牌坊. This arch, the 香海名山牌坊, is more than just a picturesque entryway. It whispers tales of a tumultuous past, a time when Hong Kong, and indeed China, yearned for stability. The very stones of the 香海名山牌坊, carved with intricate artistry, hold echoes of this era. Located at the entrance to the Tsing Shan Monastery, the 香海名山牌坊 is a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of both a city and a nation. Tsing Shan Monastery itself is a place of ancient history. It houses the Fuk Tak Rock, the Ching Wan Koon, and the Tsing Shan Temple. The front face of the arch proudly displays four characters: “香海名山” (Fragrant Sea, Famous Mountain), inscribed by former Hong Kong Governor, Sir Cecil Clementi. The reverse side bears the inscription “迴瀾是岸” (Returning Waves Reach the Shore), penned by a local barrister. These inscriptions on the 香海名山牌坊, more than mere calligraphy, are expressions of hope. They reflect a desire for calm after a storm. The stone carvings on the arch tell a story of their own, adding another layer of artistic and historical significance to the 香海名山牌坊. The arch dates back to the early 20th century, specifically 1929. Its four granite pillars stand firm, a symbol of enduring strength. They have witnessed nearly a century of change. The year 1925 marked a period of intense unrest in Hong Kong, triggered by the Canton-Hong Kong strike. Sir Cecil Clementi, newly appointed, adopted a conciliatory approach. He sought the counsel of prominent Chinese figures like Chow Shue Yan, hoping to restore peace and improve relations with the Chinese community. In 1927 and 1928, Clementi, accompanied by Chow and other community leaders, visited Tsing Shan. Inspired by the tranquil beauty, Clementi commissioned the construction of the 香海名山牌坊. He personally inscribed the front face. The inscription reflects not just the beauty of the location, but also his hope for a brighter future for Hong Kong. The reverse inscription on the 香海名山牌坊 adds another dimension. It speaks of returning waves finding the shore, a metaphor for the yearning for stability and a return to peaceful times.
