Kawasaki Municipal Mukaigaoka Elementary School stands in Miyamae Ward. This school has been a cornerstone of the community for over 150 years. The school’s history began in 1872. It started as a small educational place called Kyoiku Gakusha.
Over the years the school has transformed. In 1875 it was renamed Kyoiku Gakko. It later merged with Seijo Gakko. This formed Keirin Elementary School. In 1897 it was renamed again as Jyo Jirin Elementary School. The name evolved. It mirrored the changing times.
A significant event occurred in 1898. The school held a grand sports day. Fireworks marked the occasion. April 15 became the school’s official anniversary. The day is still celebrated.
In 1908 several elementary schools merged. These included Jyo Jirin and others. They formed Mukaigaoka Village Jyo Jirin Higher Elementary School. In 1923 the name changed slightly. It became Mukaigaoka Jyo Jirin Higher Elementary School.
Kawasaki City was founded in 1924. As a result the school’s name changed once more. It became Kawasaki Municipal Mukaigaoka Jyo Jirin Higher Elementary School. National School Order led to another name change in 1941. It was then called Kawasaki Mukaigaoka National School.
After World War II education was reformed. In 1947 the school adopted its current name. It is now known as Kawasaki Municipal Mukaigaoka Elementary School. A lunchroom was added in 1950. Full lunch programs began in 1954.
The school celebrated its 90th anniversary in 1962. A school song and flag were created. Parts of the school district were separated. This led to the opening of Suzushiro Elementary School in 1967. Kami-Sakunobe Elementary School opened in 1969. Further separations led to the creation of Shirohata Elementary School in 1972. Finally Hira Elementary School opened in 1977. Naga Elementary School opened in 1982.
A new school building was completed in 1997. A ceremony marked the occasion. In 2022 the school celebrated its 150th anniversary.
The design promotes interaction. The corridor allows a complete loop. There are no dead ends. The Galleria is an indoor-outdoor plaza. It allows children to connect with nature and each other.
