Established in 1889 Camden Council has a rich history. It wasn’t always a bustling area. Originally the Gandangara people called it Benkennie meaning dry land. They hunted and gathered sustaining themselves peacefully. Sadly British settlement disrupted their lives. Their peaceful existence ended in 1816.

Governor King granted John Macarthur 5000 acres in 1805. Macarthur named it Camden Park. His successful wool industry spurred the growth of Camden town. However Macarthur initially refused to surrender land for a town. Only after his death did his children agree. The town of Camden was established in 1840. A post office opened in 1841.

By 1883 Camden’s population had grown to over 300. People felt the need for a local council. Their first meeting took place in 1889. The Camden Council was born. It governed the area until July 2016. The council area includes several suburbs like Narellan Oran Park and Elderslie.

Camden’s growth has been phenomenal. Between 2016 and 2021 its population increased by over 50%. This rapid expansion was fueled by residential developments. Oran Park alone added more than 4000 homes. Gledswood Hills and Gregory Hills also contributed significantly.

Despite this growth Camden retains some rural characteristics. The Camden Show is an annual event. It blends amusement park rides with state fair elements. Local radio stations and newspapers serve the community. The Camden Council continues to shape this dynamic region. Its story is one of Indigenous heritage European settlement and rapid modern growth. It’s a story etched into the very fabric of this remarkable place.
