A sense of peace permeates Yohgen-ji. This Buddhist temple, nestled in Arakawa, Tokyo, holds a story as poignant as it is captivating. Yohgen-ji is more than just a temple. It’s a sanctuary of remembrance, a testament to lives lived and lost in the shadows of Edo-era Japan. Yohgen-ji’s history is deeply intertwined with the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter. In the bustling, vibrant heart of old Tokyo, this district pulsed with life, both dazzling and tragic. The women of Yoshiwara, often overlooked by history, found their final resting place within Yohgen-ji’s serene embrace. The temple became known as a place of compassion, offering solace to those marginalized by society. A common misconception is that Yohgen-ji earned the nickname “Throw-away Temple” because the bodies of impoverished prostitutes were left at the temple’s back entrance, wrapped in hay mats. The truth, however, is more nuanced. While this practice did occur, primarily for those who had transgressed the brothels’ rules, it wasn’t the origin of the nickname. The moniker arose after the Great Ansei earthquake of 1855. Approximately 500 prostitutes were interred in mass graves to prevent the spread of disease. This hurried, tragic event cemented the name “Throw-away Temple” in the public consciousness. Today, Yohgen-ji stands as a poignant reminder of the lives lived and lost in Yoshiwara. The temple’s tranquility offers a space for reflection, inviting us to remember those often forgotten by history. Yohgen-ji is a testament to resilience, compassion, and the enduring power of remembrance in the heart of Tokyo.
