A beacon of hope stands tall. Advent Lutheran Church welcomes you. Nestled near the Washington Monument its history is rich. Since 1951 this small but mighty congregation has thrived. Advent began as a mission. It was part of the United Lutheran Church in America. This later became the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1988.
The first service was held on December 9th. The congregation initially met at Oakridge Elementary School. They remained there until July 1960. The name Advent was fitting given the December start. The first Sunday of Advent is traditionally considered its birthday. In October 1952 Advent purchased a site. This one-acre plot cost $22500. It was from the Virginia Theological Seminary. The location was at 23rd Street South and South Arlington Ridge Road.
The original building was finished in July 1960. A major renovation occurred in 1985. This focused on improving the exterior and sanctuary. The current building opened in 2011. Only the sanctuary and one exterior stone wall remain from the original structure. This wall is now part of the welcome center.
Advent’s ministry has always been outward-focused. Early work included civil rights advocacy and refugee sponsorship. From 1967 to 1988 they served singles and young adults. A contemporary folk worship service was also held monthly. Advent has been home to other congregations too. They have supported various community initiatives over the years. These include FISH (now Arlington Thrive) the Advent Employment Network and bagged meal preparation for local food banks.
In 2021 Advent received the James B Hunter Award. This award is from Arlington County. It recognizes outstanding work in human rights and diversity. Advent Lutheran Church is a place of inclusivity and service. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It continues to adapt and serve the community around it. Today you see a modern building. It is fully accessible and mortgage-free. The church serves a growing young adult population in National Landing. Advent’s story is one of growth adaptation and unwavering dedication to its community. It continues to welcome all. The church embodies the spirit of its name.
