Once upon a time, Ekebysjön was just a dream. Now, standing here, we are surrounded by its reality. Ekebysjön is a lake in Danderyd Municipality. It is part of the Åkerström-Norrström coastal area. The lake is not especially deep. It is only 3 meters at its deepest point. The surface area spans just 0.0765 square kilometers. Ekebysjön sits 6 meters above sea level.
This lake is the heart of the Ekebysjön nature reserve. The reserve was established in 2008. It became a reserve due to its many unusual species of waterfowl. These birds chose the lake as their nesting site.
Around Ekebysjön you can find many different types of vegetation. There is everything from swamp and marshland to pasture and meadow. You can see dry heath vegetation and rocky outcrops too. Each area has its own unique plant and animal life. Several are habitats for threatened or protected species. You might spot species that need our protection.
As we stroll around Ekebysjön keep an eye out for diverse flora. Here, you might see cat’s foot and common rock-rose. Look closely for brittle bladder-fern and marsh violet. Jättestarr and white water-crowfoot also thrive here. Don’t forget the mosses and lichens. The red-listed felt lock moss calls this place home.
Ekebysjön is not just about plants. It is also a haven for wildlife. The black-necked grebe, little grebe, and ferruginous duck are some of the birds you might spot. These are red-listed species. At least 16 species of dragonflies also live in the reserve.
Ekebysjön plays a vital role for amphibians. It serves as a breeding ground for common frogs and moor frogs. You can also find common toads and lesser water newts. The lake is essential for their survival.
For those who love the outdoors Ekebysjön offers much. Several paths crisscross the area. There is even a bridle path and a nature school. But remember the rules of the reserve.
It is illegal to drive motorized vehicles here. Damaging the forest or vegetation is prohibited. Dogs must be kept on a leash. Disturbing wildlife is against the rules. Open fires are only allowed in designated areas. Fishing, camping, and planting foreign species are not permitted. Riding or cycling off marked trails is also forbidden.
The drainage area that feeds Ekebysjön is interesting. It is called “Rinner mot Edsviken” by SMHI. The average altitude is 23 meters above sea level. The area covers 28.04 square kilometers. No upstream drainage areas exist. This makes it the highest point. The outflow drains into the sea. Seventeen percent of the drainage area is forest. Buildings cover 21.56 square kilometers. That is 77 percent of the area.
As our walk concludes remember the importance of this reserve. Ekebysjön is more than just a lake. It is a sanctuary for nature. It is a place for recreation. Let’s protect this precious environment for future generations.
