Established in 1876, Grace Lutheran Church has a rich history. The current building, a fixture in the Crestwood neighborhood since 1927, stands as a testament to its enduring presence. Grace Lutheran Church wasn’t always located here. The congregation originally formed as an English-speaking offshoot of Trinity German Lutheran Church. They sought a place to worship in their own language and affiliated with the Ohio Synod. Grace Lutheran Church quickly became a vital mission church, helping to establish several other congregations in the area. The Ohio Synod recognized the need for a representative church in the nation’s capital. They envisioned Grace Lutheran Church as a potential influence on moral issues. Other congregations contributed to the construction of the new church, which began in 1926 and was completed in 1928. The building itself is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture. Designed by J.W.C. Corbusier, the rock-faced limestone structure boasts a majestic central tower. Look closely and you’ll see the lancet windows, quatrefoils, crenelation, and pinnacles, all characteristic of this style. The timber-framed roof adds to the church’s historical charm. In 2013, Grace Lutheran Church received well-deserved recognition. It was designated a historic landmark in the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Grace Lutheran Church continues its mission of service and community engagement. The church offers Sunday services at 10:30 am, both in person and online. They welcome everyone to join their community through various activities. From Sunday School and bible studies to choir practices and community outreach, there’s a place for everyone at Grace Lutheran Church.
