Envision the grandeur of a bygone era. Right here stands Palácio dos Cedros, a testament to the opulence and vision of the Jafet family. Palácio dos Cedros isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and marble, whispering tales of a family who shaped São Paulo’s destiny. The Jafet family, Lebanese immigrants, arrived in Brazil in the late 19th century. They quickly rose to prominence, becoming pioneers of São Paulo’s industrialization. Basílio Jafet, one of the brothers, commissioned this magnificent residence in 1922. He chose the renowned engineer Heribaldo Siciliano, the mind behind iconic structures like the Palácio dos Correios and the University of São Paulo’s Faculty of Medicine, to bring his vision to life. The palace, completed in 1923, originally bore the name Victor Hugo. It sits on a sprawling 14,000 square meter plot in the Ipiranga district, a neighborhood deeply intertwined with the Jafet family’s legacy. The name “Palácio dos Cedros,” meaning “Palace of Cedars,” comes from the lush cedar trees adorning its gardens. These trees, native to Lebanon, symbolize the family’s roots. One particular cedar holds special significance. It was a gift from Lebanese President Camille Chamoun and his wife, Zehfa, during their visit in 1954. The architecture of Palácio dos Cedros is a captivating blend of Renaissance grandeur with hints of oriental and baroque influences. Imagine ascending the grand Carrara marble staircase, the same steps graced by presidents and dignitaries. Picture the ornate iron door, emblazoned with the Jafet family crest. Inside, over 50 rooms spread across four floors showcase exquisite details. Marquetry floors, towering columns, and a breathtaking skylight illuminating the central atrium create an atmosphere of timeless elegance. Basílio Jafet, a visionary, envisioned his home becoming a museum of antiquities after his daughters, Angela and Violeta, passed away. He even registered this wish officially in 1928. While his dream of a museum hasn’t yet materialized, Palácio dos Cedros continues to serve as a vibrant hub for São Paulo’s social scene. It hosts weddings, debutante balls, and corporate events, its walls echoing with laughter and celebration. In 1934, another palace rose on the same grounds, a gift from Basílio to his daughter Violeta and her husband, Chedid. This second mansion, named Versailles, mirrors the grandeur of its French namesake. Its mirrored hall, inspired by the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, and a Travertine marble staircase exude an aura of regal splendor. Palácio dos Cedros stands as a powerful reminder of the Jafet family’s enduring legacy, their impact on São Paulo’s industrial and urban landscape. In 2005, CONPRESP, São Paulo’s historical preservation council, recognized the historical and cultural significance of the palaces and their surrounding gardens, ensuring their preservation for generations to come. As you stand before Palácio dos Cedros, let its story transport you back to a time of elegance and ambition, a testament to the enduring spirit of a remarkable family.
