Founded in 1903 Branksome Hall stands proudly before you. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place steeped in history and brimming with stories. Branksome Hall began its journey at 102 Bloor Street East. It housed 70 girls. Margaret Scott the first principal guided the school’s early years. The school then moved to 592 Sherbourne Street. Edith Read took the helm in 1910. In 1912 Branksome Hall found its permanent home at 10 Elm Avenue. This elegant property known as Hollydene was purchased for a hefty sum. Principal Read expanded the campus. She added five homes. A gymnasium and a pool also appeared. She created the Prefect and Clan systems. She chose the Hunting Stewart tartan for the school uniform. Branksome Hall even sheltered students and staff from Sherborne Girls’ School during World War II. This connection continues with an annual student exchange. Principal Read served for 48 years. Six more principals followed her. Branksome Hall became a fully authorized IB World School in 2003. It opened Branksome Hall Asia in 2012. In 2015 the athletics and wellness centre opened. Even Gloria Steinem a feminist icon visited in 2017. The school continues to evolve. A new Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre are under construction. Branksome Hall was even recognized as an Apple Distinguished School in 2023. The school’s legacy is one of academic excellence. It fosters a global perspective and empowers young women. Branksome Hall remains a beacon of learning in Toronto. It’s a testament to the vision and dedication of those who built it. It’s a place where generations of girls have thrived.
