Carl Gustaf who? You might be surprised to learn that Wrangelska residenset was once a grand royal residence, known as “Kungshuset” or “The King’s House”. This magnificent palace, right before your eyes, has a history as captivating as its architecture. It all began in the 16th century as part of Gustav Vasa’s defensive fortifications. Over time, it transformed from a stronghold into a luxurious palace, largely thanks to Count Carl Gustaf Wrangel. He commissioned architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder to expand and enhance the palace in the mid-17th century. Tragedy struck in 1693 when a fire ravaged the palace. Rebuilt to new heights of grandeur, it served as the temporary home of the Swedish Royal family after the Tre Kronor Castle fire in 1697. Wrangelska residenset remained the royal residence for decades until the completion of the Royal Palace of Stockholm in 1754. Although no longer home to royalty, Wrangelska residenset continues to play a crucial role in Swedish society. Since 1756, it has housed the Svea Court of Appeal. The next time you pass by, remember the echoes of royalty and the stories whispered within the walls of Wrangelska residenset, a true testament to Stockholm’s vibrant past.
